Kelly Joe Phelps was born in Sumner, Washington and now lives in Vancouver. In the 1980s and 90s he feel under the influence of Country Blues musicians and became well known for his slide guitar playing. Moving into the 21st century he focused on his songwriting and stopped playing slide in public. When I last saw him live in 2003 the Blues influence was much less to the fore. His last album and recent live performances represent something of a return to his roots (half the time finger picking on an acoustic guitar, and half playing slide on a National guitar).
