30th August 2013 at the Nehru Centre, London W1.

(free event).

Country: India (British resident). Style: Carnatic Instrumental.

Lineup: Jyotsna Srikanth (violin), V. Krishna (mridangam).

Jyotsna Srikanth from Kamataka lives in East London. Here she was playing traditional Carnatic music. I photographed her last year with one of her fushion projects: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157630071538207/. She was accompanied by V. Krishna from Bangalore, who comes from a family of musicians (his father played Ghatam and his mother was a singer). Like Srikanth (who is a medical doctor), he has also maintained a non-musical career, being a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore.
In this photo: Indian classical music violinsts usually sit cross legged with the scroll wedged against an ankle. This enables players to move their hand more freely on the fingerboard playing gamakas or grace notes with slides and other movements on the strings.
