Zoe Rahman was brought up in Sussex with a Bengali father and English mother. In her music she has explored her Bengali roots (and to a lesser extent her Irish ones through a grandmother). In the past I’ve seen her playing with Clark Tracey (several times) and Reem Kelani, but this was the first time leading her own group. I’ve taken photos of younger brother Idris with the Soothsayers (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157632437157723/), the Fontanelles (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157630071538207/) and the Matzoh Boys (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157627609190709/). The two of them were joined by Davide Mantovani (from Ferrara, Italy who moved to the UK in 1991) and Gene Calderazzo (from New York who moved to the UK in 1995). Whilst I’ve seen Mantovani with Arun Ghosh, Seckou Keita and Doudou Cissoko, this was the first time I’ve photographed him.
