26th July 2013 at The Scoop, London SE1.

Part of More London Free Festival (annual event).

Country: Britain. Style: New Orleans style Brass Band.

Line Up: Emile Martyn (snare d), Ben Martyn (bass d), Adrian Cox (alto sax), George Simmons (trombone), Mike Godwin (tuba).

Emile and Ben Martyn are the sons of drummer Barry Martyn. They were brought up in New Orleans after their father moved there (Harold Dejan was Emile’s godfather). Back in the UK they formed The Fallen Heroes which normally plays R and B with electric guitar, bass guitar and drum kit. Here the instrumentation was that of a traditional New Orleans Brass Band (though with a Tuba rather than a Sousaphone), and the songs they played included Paul Barbarin’s Bourbon Street Parade, Little Liza Jane, King of the Swingers, Lily of the Valley, Mama Don’t Allow, Down by the Riverside and, of course, Saints. See www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626104019427/ for photos of Ben Martyn with Barry Martyn, www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157634388973084 and www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157634461399888/ for Emile Martyn with the Ken Colyer Legacy New Orleans Jazz Band and the Tim Wacher Marching Band, and www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157630055901811/ for George Simmons with Katy Carr.
