5th July 2013 at Guildhall Yard, London EC2.

City of London Festival (free event), www.colf.org/.

Country: Britain (including Scotland) & United States (Scottish resident). Style: Bluegrass.

Lineup: Pat McGarvey (banjo/v), Rory Butler (v/g), Chris Purcell (g/v), Danny Hart (mandolin), Dirk Ronneburg (fiddle), [probably] Marty Camino (b).

Pat McGarvey was born in North Belfast, with his family moving to Liverpool when he was aged 3. He played Bass Guitar with Country Rock outfits the Arlenes and the Coal Porters (switching to Banjo when the latter went acoustic and switched to Bluegrass). He then formed the Southern Tenant Folk Union. The band has gone through a lot of lineup changes. McGarvey is the one remaining member from the version I saw in 2007. This was initially down to McGarvey’s move in 2008 from London to Edinburgh, but now Chris Purcell is the only other survivor from the first Scottish lineup (others who have come and gone include such mainstays of the Scottish folk scene as Adam Bulley and Ben Ivitsky).
