29th June 2013 at Barbican, London EC2.

Country: Lebanon. Style: settings of Mahmoud Darwish’s poems.

Lineup: Marcel Khalife (v/oud), Oumaima Khalil (v), Yolla Keryakos (v), Ayad Khalife (p), Ismail Lumanovski (clarinet), Anthony Millet (chromatic accordion), Antoine Khalife (violin), Sary Khalife (cello), Mark Helias (b), Aleksandar Petrov (tapan), Bachar Khalife (percussion).

I first saw this celebrated Labanese Oud player and composer in 2002 with his wife, two sons Rami and Bachir, Oumaima Khalil (who yhas performed with Khalife since she was 12) and Peter Herbert on bass. This time it was the Al Mayadeen Ensemble with many more musicians. No Rami, but Khalife’s brother Antoine and two nephews Ayad and Sari. Marcel Khalife is known for combining Arabic music with other styles. The presence of two performers from Macedonia gave the band a strong Balkan influence.
