14th June 2013 at St Ethelburga’s, London EC2.

Part of "Listen to the World" series.

Country: Morocco (British resident). Style: North African (Andalusi & Gnawa) / Fusion.

Lineup: Soufian Saihi (oud/gimbri/v), Haruna Komatsu (clarinet/ qraqab), Elizabeth Nott (riq/darbuka/daf/bendir/qraqab/etc.), Demi Garcia Sabat (cajón/calabash/udu/etc.), Riad Abji (b).

This band was formed in 2011. It includes Soufian Saihi and Demi Garcia Sabat, both in Melange which I photographed a few months ago (though Saihi was absent for that particular gig) (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157633235330942/) and Elizabeth Nott who I phorographed accompanying Maya Youssef a couple of months before that (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157632943679503/). There was a stark contrast between the earlier part of the show (more medative Classical Arabic influenced tunes) and the Gnawa music which closed it which had members of the audience up dancing.
