13th June 2013 at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, London EC2.

“The Many Voices of Women from Turkey” interview session plus music (free event) [music organised by Ed Emery].

Country: Turkey (British resident). Style: Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian, Greek Traditional.

Lineup: Suna Alan (v/tef), Soner Gölbaş (clarinet/bağlama), Öncü Göçebe (g), Riza Koyupinar (darbuka/bendir) with Ed Emery (introductions).

This event was an interview of writer/journalists Ece Temelkuran and Meltem Halaceli, plus the Awaz Ensemble providing songs at the beginning and end of the evening. The performance was an off-shoot from the SOAS Rebetiko Group which has explored the connections between the musics of the region (Ed Emery was there to provide information on the songs). The singer was Suna Alan, a Kurd born in Turkey and now living in London. Öncü Göçebe and Rıza Koyupına are both members of the group Anatolia. I took photos of Soner Gölbaş a few weeks before accompanying the Nefes Ensemble at "Zakir: Songs of Alevi and Yârsân": www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157633942450365/.
