3rd June 2013 at Barbican, London EC2.

Country: Algeria. Style: Chaabi.

Lineup: Abdelkader Chercham (v/mandol), Luc Cherki (v/g), Liamine Haimoun [“Chiekh Liamine”] (v/mandol), Abdelmadjid Meskoud (v/mandol), Rachid Berkani (oud), Mohamed Ferkioui (piano accordion), Smail Ferkioui (p), Saadoun Ali (ney) and mandola, guitar, mandolin, 2 x violin, double bass, 3 x percussion. Plus at the beginning of the concert: Philippe Darmon (v), Mohamed Touzan (v).

El Gusto have been described as a Buena Vista Social Club for the 1950s Chaabi of Algiers. Veterans of the music were found and reunited with Jewish musicians who left for France after Algerian independence. Mohamed Ferkioui is now into his 80s and Rachid Berkani and Luc Cherki their 70s. When I saw the group in 2007, soon after the project was formed, the band numbered 30 to 40. It was now down to 17 (plus the two extra singers for the opening number). Of the Jewish contingent Luc Cherki remains, but Maurice el Medioni, Robert Castel and Rene Perez were absent.
In this photo: At the front (left to right) Mohamed Ferkioui, Rachid Berkani, Abdelkader Chercham, Abdelmadjid Meskoud.
