26th May 2013 at Millfield Arts Centre (Theatre), Enfield, Middlesex.

“Zakir: Songs of Alevi and Yârsân”, www.zakir-project.com/.
The Alevi religious tradition in Turkey and related Yârsân (or Ahl-e Haqq) tradition in Iran both have elements in common with Sufism.

Country: Turkey (including British resident). Style: Traditional Alevi (Deyiş & Semah).
Lineup: Dertli Divani [Veli Aykut] (v/saz), with (left to right) Ziya Gunes, Ali Sakalli, Mustafa Kilçik, Ferhat Karaca, Tahir Palali, Ahmet Koçak (all saz/v) and 6 dancers (2 men, 4 women).

Dertli Divani was born in 1962 near Şanlıurfa in south-eastern Turkey. He has been called the most important living Alevi Aşık or Zakir - a performer of sung poetry Deyiş.Towards the end of the concert the religious ritual dance Semah was performed. It reminded me a bit of the dance of Mevlevi Sufis - starting very slowly (initially just hand movements) and getting faster and faster. The dancers moved in a circle, rotating through 360 degrees and bowing as they passed the musicians.
