28th April 2013 at Apple Tree, London WC1.

Come Down and Meet the Folks (free with collection), www.comedownandmeetthefolks.co.uk/.

Country: United States. Style: Folk-Blues.

Lineup: "Spider" John Koerner (v/g/harmonica).

Now 74, Spider John Koerner was here to launch a new album “What's Left of Spider John”. His accompanist of more than 30 years, and on the album, Chip (Taylor) Smith was absent having a hip replacement. Koerner originally came from Rochester, NY but has lived in Minneapolis for over 50 years since attending the University of Minnesota. He plays what he calls “Sixties bar-room style” - a stompin, belting sound designed to be heard across noisy rooms. A call from the audience for more Blues was ignored. Whilst his repertoire has in many years abandoned Country Blues standards for classic American Folk Songs (“The Cuckoo”, “St James Infirmary”, “Days of ‘49”, Muskrat” [a.k.a “Rattlesnake”], etc.) plus some of his own compositions, there is a blues feel to everything he does (especially in the Guitar playing).
