16th April 2013 at Queen Elizabeth Hall (Front Room), London SE1.

Part of Alchemy Festival (free event).

Country: India (British resident). Style: Qawwali.

Lineup: Abi Sampa (vocalist/harmonium/electronic veena), Madhu Aiyaa (flute), Jay Badiani (harmonium/v), Amrit Dhuffer (tabla), Puru Khaushik (guitar/bass guitar), Manan U (bass guitar/guitar).

A newly formed London based group performed Qawwali favourites. They came together on through musical perforances in India orgabnised by a medical charity. Their interpretations appeared add elements of other styles. My knowledge of Qawwali is very limited but compared to more traditional groups which I’ve seen they had more varied instrumention, lacked the chorus-cum-clappers, and the vocals were not quite as estatic.
