26th February 2013 at Barbican, London EC2.

Country: Britain (United States resident). Style: “Folk Funk” (one of Thompson’s own description of the trio).

Lineup: Richard Thompson (v/g), Taras Prodaniuk (bass g), Michael Jerome (d).

After Fairport Convention and his duo with Linda Thompson, Richard Thompson moved to the USA. He regularly tours the UK, either concentrating on electric guitar with a band (usually a quartet) or acoustic guitar (by himself or with Danny Thompson). He has used a trio format for local gigs in California and festivals, and after an album “Electric” with Prodaniuk and Jerome he was now touring with them. I’ve seen Jerome with Thompson before and Prodaniuk with Lucinda Williams. The majority of the set (10 of 19 songs) were from 2007’s “Street Warrior” onwards - 6 of them from “Electric”. There were still several of the old classics like “Tear Stained Letter”, “Wall of Death” and “Beeswing”. Inspired by the “weedy” or “underpowered” trio format, they did a version of “White Room” (and of “Hey Joe” at some of the gigs on the tour). The previous night they played the Shepherd’s Bush Empire and (much as I usually prefer to sit down at gigs these days), I am sure the atmosphere suffered compared to a stand up venue. Certainly the attempts to achive any audience participation in singing along with “Little Sally Rackett” or even “Tear Stained Letter” were noticeably unsuccessful.
In this photo: When playing electric Thompson mainly used this red Strat (expect for a brief use of a sunburst Strat).
