13th February 2013 at The Bedford (Upstairs Room), London SW12.

Country: Britain. Style: Traditional English Folk.

Lineup: Sam Lee (v/shruti box/jaw harp), Flora Curzon (violin), Jonah Brody (koto/ukulele/jaw harp), Francesca Ter-Berg (cello), Camilo Tirodo (tabla/calabash/cajón), Steve Chadwick (trumpet/flugelhorn).

I’ve seen Same Lee many times as a solo a cappella singer. Only once before with a band (if you don’t count an appearance at the National Theatre Foyer with Lauren McCormick and Joe Buirski under the name of the Magpie’s Nest Band). Then the band was called the Gillie Boys (for photos see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157625131812406/). Only Francesca Ter-Berg remains from the previous lineup. All the songs were traditional, mostly learnt from Romany or Traveller performers. They were given contemporary arrangements and unusual instrumentation. Though saying that, this was the third time in a month that I saw a Traditional Folk band which included a trumpet player (the others bands were those of Michael McGoldrick and Rona Wilkie). I took photos of the violinist, Flora Curzon, just a few weeks before in a very different context - Dunajska Kapelye (see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157632812707264/).
