10th January 2013 at Great Northern Railway Tavern, London N8.

Jazz at the Tavern, www.jazzinlondon.net/jazzatthetavern/.

Country: Britain (including Scotland). Style: Jazz - Modern.

Lineup: Henry Lowther (trumpet/flugelhorn), Jim Mullen (g), Dave Green (b), Stu Butterfield (d).

This group brings together four musicians active in numerous other groups on the British Jazz scene. Formed in 1999 as the Henry Lowther - Jim Mullen Quartet, they were still performing under that name when I first saw them in 2003 (as part of the late lamented Commuter Jazz series). Somewhere along the line they started billing themselves using a phrase Jim Mullen used one night to describe the group. I’ve photographed all four of them with other bands: Henry Lowther with Chris Biscoe/Profiles groups and Simon Spillett, Jim Mullen with a quartet of his own, Dave Green with Jimmy Hastings and Scott Hamilton, and Stu Butterfield with Chris Biscoe/Profiles groups. For these photos, click on the Tag of the name of the relevant musician. This was the first night of a new Jazz Club for which Stu Butterfield is one of the organisers (having been previously involved with Clubs at the Fiddler’s Elbow and King’s Head). The tunes they played were not originals, having been written by Ellington, Monk, Clifford Brown, Horace Silver and others.
