9th December 2012 at SOAS (G2 Lecture Theatre), London WC1.
[organised by Ed Emery].
Country: Greece & Greek Cyprus & France (all British residents). Style: Rebetiko & Laïkó.
Lineup: Pavlos Carvalho (bouzouki/v), Vicky [Variliki] Anastasiou (v), Kostas Voros (baglamas/bouzouki/v), Stelios Katsatidis (chromatic accordion), Sarah Dubost-Hautefeuille (g) and guest: Ed Emery (baglamas/v).
Vasilis Tsitsanis (1915-84) was a major composer and bouzouki player of Rebetiko and Laïkó music. The musicians assembled for this tribute concert (which followed on from a conference about Tsitsanis the same day) are all regulars from the London Greek music scene. They were billed (on the ticket and in Ed Emery’s announcements) as the SOAS Rebetiko Band. However more of them performed at a Plastikes Karekles gig I attended earlier this year (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157629612638048/) than were there the last time I saw the SOAS Rebetiko Band (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157628355974423/). My last concert in this room saw another of these musicians joining the SOAS Iranian Band for a Greek and Turkish music segement of the evening (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157631109604824/).
