19th October 2012 at the County Arms, London SW18.

Court Sessions (traditional song and music club), sessioneast2.tripod.com/.

Country: Iceland & Britain (Icelandic resident). Style: Traditional Icelandic and Traditional English Folk.

Lineup: Bára Grímsdóttir (v/kantele), Chris Foster (v/g/langspil).

Bára Grímsdóttir was brought up in Vatnsdalur in the north of Iceland and the capital Reykjavik, and Chris Foster in Somerst. The two of them have worked together since 2000 after meeting at a Folk Festival in Devon, and live in Reykjavik. They alternate between traditional Icelandic music and English folk (interesting versions of well known ballads like Lucy Wan, Lord Bateman, The Cruel Mother and The Raggle Taggle Gypsies). As well as Guitar, the instruments played at Court Sessions were two zithers - the Finnish Kantele and the Icelandic Langspil (though the particular versions of both were both made in Cheltenham). They usually add a third zither the Icelandic Fidla (Íslensk fiðla), though this was absent on this night.
