27th September 2012 at LSO St Lukes, London EC1.

Part of Transcender Festival.
This concert was a Celebration of Iraqi music linked to a film of the same name which is in the process of production: www.fruitfulfilms.com.au/.

Country: Iraq (Dutch resident). Style: Maqam.

Lineup: Farida Mohammed Ali (v), Mohammad Gomar Al-Bawl (joza a.k.a.djoze or jawzeh), Abdulatif Saad Al-Obaidi (oud), Adnan Shanan Addul Amir (ney), Jamil al Asadi (qānūn a.k.a. kanun), Firat Fadhel Hussein (tabla a.k.a. darbuka), Mohammed Lafia Atshan Al-Rubaie (riq).

Farida Mohammed Ali is from Kerbala (a city near Baghdad), studied with Munir Bashir and performs Maqam, a form of Irqqi classical music. Her accompanying group, the Iraqi Maqam Ensemble, was founded in 1989. In 1999 she and the group sought asylum in the Netherlands. They don’t seem to perform in London very often (the last time I saw them was 2003). At this concert the musicians included her husband (Joza and Ensemble leader), son (Oud) and brother (Qānūn).
