26th June 2012 at Broadgate Circle, London EC2.
City of London Festival (free event), www.colf.org/.
Country: Britain & Australia (British resident) & Bangladesh (British resident). Style: Jazz - Modern / World (South Asian & Gypsy).
Lineup: Tony Haynes (p/trombone/melodica), Louise Elliot (tenor sax/flute), Gerry Hunt (g/clarinet), Geraldine McEwan (violin), Yousef Ali Khan (tabla/djembe).
The Grand Union Orchestra was formed in 1982 to provide music for theatre productions. Many of its performances since have focused on combining Jazz with the music of a particular part of the world. The band usually augmented by musicians from the relevant countries. This set includes tunes from "Raga, Tal and Gypsy Music" - which aimed to show the links between South Asian music and European Gypsy music. The full orchestra contains 15 to 20 members (for example, when I last saw them in 1996), but for events like this there was a slimed down band. It included founder member and Artistic Director Tony Haynes, plus Louise Elliot and Gerry Hunt who have been members for over 20 years.
