15th June 2012 at Royal Festival Hall (Bar level 2), London SE1.

Friday Lunch (free event).

Country: Britain & Congo/Argentina & Venezuela & Brazil (all British residents). Style: Afro-Peruvian/Criolla.

Line Up: David Mortara (cajón/cajita/spoons/quijada/v), Juanita Euka (v), Tim Sharp (p), Adolfredo Pulido (bass g) and guest Adriano Adewale (cajón/pandeiro/caxixi/shaker/seed rattle).

David Mortara formed Malambo in 2007 (incidentally a previous Afro-Peruvian group of his included David Miles who I photographed recently as one of Katy Carr’s Aviators). Both he and Tim Sharp have spent time in Peru studying/working and playing with local musicians. Juanita Euka was born in Spain to Congolese parents and raised in Argentina. She is also part of the groups Wara and the London Lucumi Choir. Adolfredo Pulido is from Venezuela and studied in the USA. Together they play the traditional music of the black people of coastal Peru and Lima: rhythms such as festejo, vals, tondero, landó, maninera, and panilivio. The group regularly invite a guest musician to join them. This time it was the Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale. I have taken photos of him with his own group.
