7th June 2012 at Horseshoe, London EC1.

Islington Folk Club, www.islingtonfolkclub.co.uk/ifc.html.

Country: Britain. Style: Contemporary & Traditional English & Irish Folk.

Lineup: Maggie Boyle (v/flute/ bodhrán), Paul Downes (g/banjo/v).

Maggie Boyle’s parents came from Derryloughan, Gweebarra, Donegal and moved to London. Maggie was born in Battersea in 1956. She grew up with traditional Irish music through Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and the White Hart in Fulham. She has performed as part of the Boyle Family (with bothers Kevin and Paul), in John Renbourne’s Ship of Fools group, duos with Steve Tilston, Gary Boyle, and Gordon Tyrrall; with Duck Baker and Ben Paley as the Expatriate Game; and in the trio Grace Notes. Paul Downes is from Devon and has performed in duos with Phil Beer and Mick Ryan, and as part of the bands Arizona Smoke Review and the Joyce Gang. There were some traditional songs and tunes (mostly Irish) at this gig, but more by contemporary singer-songwriters like Mick Ryan, Steve Ashley and Nick Burbridge. I took photos a couple of years ago of Maggie Boyle as part of the Grace Notes: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157625622550484/.
