The group is based around husband and wife Brett Sparks (from Odessa, TX) who contributes a fine baritone voice, and Rennie Sparks (from Long Island, NY) who is the lyricist. Providing gothic tales of murder, suicide and strange happenings. The Handsome Family was as formed in Chicago, IL in 1993 before the couple moved to Alburqueque, NM in 2001. They add a percussionist (and sometimes in mandolinist/fiddler) for live performances. Recently Rennie has swapped her bass guitar for a ukulele bass. The band are known for their on-stage shtick which some find highly amusing and others very grating (for me it can be both).
