27th April 2012 at St Ethelburga’s, London EC2.

Part of "Listen to the World" series.

Country: Greece & France (both British resident) & Britain. Style: Music of modern Greek composers.

Lineup: (first half) Pavlos Carvalho (bouzouki/cello), Manolis Taouxis (bouzouki), Stelios Katsatidis (chromatic accordion), Pavlos Melas (g/v), Meg Hamilton (violin), Sarah Dubost-Hautefeuille (cello), Spyros Andonopoulos (v), Katerina Clambaneva (v).

The first half of this concert featuring eight musician was billed as Plastikes Karekles (though the band varies in size and membership around the core duo of Pavlos Carvalho and Sarah Dubost-Hautefeuille). This consisted of arrangement of works by Greek composers such as Theodorakis and Hadzidakas, and had a strong Classical music influence. In the second half the band expanded to sixteen when joined by their “friends” including Manolis Pappos, a well known bouzouki player visitng from Greece. This time the music was more traditional, with a large dose of Rebetiko. I have taken photos of many of the musicians at this concert with other groups: Carvalho and Melas with Çiğdem Aslan (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626101235140/), Clambaneva, Muzmee and Çamurcuoğlu with PAKAW! (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157629349798770/) and Anastasiou and Hamilton with the SOAS Rebetiko Band (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157628355974423/). That’s not counting some of the same performers playing music from different traditions with She'koyokh, Jaljala and in a concert of songs from Iran.
