Address: 45 Mount Pleasant, London WC1.
Dates: 2005 to date.
Come Down and Meet the Folks describes its remit as “Country / Americana / Bluegrass / Folk/ Blues / Pub Rock”. It was started by Alan Tyler and Sean Read (both of the Rockingbirds). Within a couple of years Read was replaced as co-host by Big Steve Pulford (of the Arlenes). After Big Steve moved to the USA in 2003, Tyler carried on alone.
The first venue was the Engine Room in Chalk Farm Road (1996-99), followed by Rosie O’Grady’s in Royal College Street (1999-2000), the Golden Lion, also in Royal College Street, (2000-03) and the Fiddler’s Elbow in Kentish Town (2003-05). Since November 2005 the Club has been at the Apple Tree in Clerkenwell.
Over the years all the better known British performers of American Roots Music have appeared e.g. Hank Wangford, Southern Tenant Folk Union, Big Joe Louis, the Coal Porters. Sprinkled with the occasional US touring act e.g. the Gourds, Billy C Farlowe, Rachel Harrington.
I’ve attended gigs at the last three venues only, seeing Little George Sueref (2003 and 2007), Terry Clark (2003) and BettySoo (2011).

UPDATE: What’s Cookin’… shows at the Birkbeck Tavern ended in Feb 2013 when the pub was sold. Starting in May 2013 it has now returned to an old home - the Sheep Walk (which itself has reverted to the name of The Crown).
UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: During 2013 What’s Cookin’… moved yet again, to another of its former homes - the Leytonstone Ex-Servicemen’s Club.
What’s Cookin’… describes its remit as “Rockin’ country-fried music”. It is run by Steve Ferguson and Ali Vickers. They were inspired to begin the Club by Alan Tyler’s Come Down and Meet the Folks.
The first venue was the Plough Inn in Walthamstow (2004-05). From 2005 to 2010 the Club was at the Sheep Walk in Leytonstone, also in 2007 having some gigs at the nearby Leytonstone Ex-Servicemen’s Club. From 2009 to July 2011 another Leytonstone venue was used, the North Star (initially alternating with the Sheep Walk). The first gig at the current venue, the Birkbeck Tavern in Leyton, took place in September 2011. This pub is also managed by Steve and Ali.
British performers who have appeared here include the Broken Family Band, the Coal Porters, Michael Messer and Little George Sueref. Visiting acts from the USA include Jason Ringenberg (who has appeared at the Club most years), Charlie Parr, Darden Smith and Paul Burch.
I didn’t attend any of the Club’s gigs at the Plough Inn (although I did go there from Walthamstow Folk Club nights), but have been there at all the subsequent venues. Performers I’ve seen include Southern Tenant Folk Union (2007), Bon Temps Playboys (2007), Gareth Rowan (2009), the Maybelles (2009), Beverly Smith & Carl Jones (2009), Alan Tyler (2010), Aaron Jonah Lewis (2011) and Leon Hunt (2011). I also saw a What’s Cookin’... promoted gig with the Wilders at the Luminaire in 2009.
