9th April 2012 at National Theatre (Djanogly Concert Pitch), London SE1.

Free Foyer Music.

Country: Cuba (British resident) & British. Style: Traditional Cuban (Son, Cha Cha Cha, Mambo, Danzon, Rumba, etc.).

Lineup: Jose Zalba Smith (flute/claves), Paul Trippett (b/claves), Alex "Zands" Duggan (congas/bongos/maracas).

Jose Zalba Smith was born in Havana and is the son of Javier Zalba (who I’ve seen in London with Buena Vista Social Club in 2000 and Roberto Fonseca in 2007). Jose moved to London in 2003, initially to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He plays in a variety of ensembles from classical music to this one which focuses on Cuban music of the 1920s to the 1940s. It was formed in 2007 by three musicians who had studied at the Guildhall (Paul Trippett who went to the RAM has stood in from time to time over the years for original bassist Mercedes Carroll).
