6th February 2012 at the Royal Festival Hall, London SE1.
Country: Britain (including Scotland) & Ireland & United States. Style: Traditional Scottish & Irish & American (Old Time) Folk & Americana.
Lineup: Jerry Douglas (dobro/lap steel g/MD), Aly Bain (fiddle/MD), Raul Malo (v/g), Karen Matheson (v), Ruth Moody (v/bjo/g), Declan O’Rourke (v/g/ukulele), Eddi Reader (v/g), Bruce Molsky(v/fiddle/banjo), Tim O'Brien (v/mandolin/fiddle), John McCusker (fiddle/cittern), Michael McGoldrick (flute/uilleann pipes/whistle), Phil Cunningham (piano accordion/p), Donald Shaw (p/harmonium/piano accprdion), Russ Barenberg (g/mandolin), John Doyle (g), Danny Thompson (b), James Mackintosh (d).
Transatlantic Sessions originated as a television programme (two series in the mid 1990s, three others more recently). Since 2004 it has been an annual concert at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow (now expanded to shows on two nights). Since 2010 it has gone on a short tour of British and Irish venues after the Festival. I’ve seen it all three years at the Royal Festival Hall. The Musical Directors of Transatlantic Sessions are Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas. There are around 16 performers each year, roughly half from each side of the Atlantic. There is a fairly consistent lineup of instrumentalists (especially recently), while the vocalists rotate (although Karen Matheson and Eddi Reader have done most years). The intention is to explore the links between traditional music in Scotland and Ireland and in the United States. Mostly they succeed, though when some of the vocalists perform their own songs (in styles such as Country Music or Contemporary Singer Songwriter) the connections to this theme are less apparent.
