25th (or rather early hours of 26th) January 2012 at the Royal Concert Hall (Exhibition Hall), Glasgow.
Late Night Sessions, Celtic Connections Festival, www.celticconnections.com/.
Country: Britain - Scotland. Style: Traditional Scottish Folk.
Lineup: Andy Thorburn (p), Adam Sutherland (fiddle), John Somerville (piano accordion), Iain Copeland (d), Jock Urquahart (poetry/rapping).
Andy Thorburn’s version of Babelfish is one of a number of bands across the world to bear the name. They were born as an ad-hoc small hours Celtic Connections Festival Club get-together, and continued for many years on that basis. A press release from them says they first emerged in 1998 or 1999 (although for some reason their website bio suggests 2005). I saw them myself at the Club on the 29th Jan 2003 and 24th Jan 2005. Now in 2012 they have made things more formal with a tour and album. They get an amazingly loud, stompin’ sound from just four musicians - Andy Thorburn of Blazin’ Fiddles, Adam Sutherland of Peatbog Faeries and Session A9, John Somerville of Treacherous Orchestra and Box Club and Iain Copeland ex-Peatbog Faeiries and ex-Session A9. Thorburn is from Lancashire, but based in Scotland since the 1980s.
