Olov Johansson, Mikael Marin and Roger Tallroth formed Väsen in 1989 to play the traditional dance music of their home area, Uppland in eastern Sweden. Johnasson and Tallroth still live in Uppsala, Marln now livres in Hagsätra, near Stockholm. These days Väsen play mostly original music. For a while they expanded to a quartet by adding percussionist André Ferrari, but reverted to a trio because of his reluctance to tour. At Celtic Connections they shared a double bill with Catriona McKay & Chris Stout.
