8th December 2011 at Horseshoe, London EC1.

Islington Folk Club, www.islingtonfolkclub.co.uk/ifc.html.

Country: Greek Cyprus (British resident). Style: Rebetiko.

Lineup: Vicky [Variliki] Anastasiou (v/daf), Peyman Heydarian (santur), Hamit Sag (saz), Nigel Fonseca (g), Ed Emery (baglamas/v) and joining them for the second half: Cahit Baylav (violin/v), Meg Hamilton (violin).

The band started six years ago, originating in Rebetiko seminars at SOAS (the School of Oriental and African Studies) and developed through a monthly session at the Horseshoe. It has always had a flexible membership, the last time they were at the Islington Folk Club there were 16 musicians. Some members have been SOAS students, others not. This version was an oddity for a Rebetiko ensemble in not including a Bouzouki. The band has always stressed the connections between the music in Greece and Turkey, and likes to alternate between vocals in the two languages. On a recent tour there were three vocalists - a Greek Cypriot, Turk and Kurd. Only the first was present here. However when Cahit Baylav joined for the second half, he was able to add some Turkish vocals. Two of the band were involved in a “Songs of Love and Liberation for Iran” concert earlier this year. For photos see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626341410587/. Cahit Baylav was in the band of Çiğdem Aslan (she was also once part of the SOAS Rebetiko Band): www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626101235140/. Meg Hamilton is in She'koyokh and Jaljala: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157627609190709/ and www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626508097674/.
