5th December 2011 at SOAS (Brunei Gallery), London WC1.

Part of SOAS Concert Series (free event). www.soas.ac.uk/music/events/concerts/.

Country: Japan. Style: Yamada-ryu Koto.

Lineup: Kameyama Kono (koto/v), Naka Kaori (shamisen/v), Michael Soumei Coxall (shakuhachi).

Kameyama Kono is an exponent of the Yamada-ryu style of Koto. This was established by Yamada Kengyo in the late 18th century in theKanto plain around Tokyo. Yamada-ryu is one of the two main schools characterised by the shape of the picks (round), how the picks strike the strings (at their tips) and the player’s position in relation to the instrument (the knees resting evenly against the Koto). Naka Kaori is Kono’s daughter. Orginally learning the Koto, she moved over to the Shamisen (actually called a Sangen in this style of music, both mean three strings,). Micheal Coxall studied Kinko-ryu in Japan and performs with the group Hibiki. For photos of them at Japan Maturi see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157627806844256/.
