A very sad day for the world today, so here is just a bit of daft fun which I hope will raise a small smile somewhere.

These were all taken earlier in the year on on the tiny island of Lunga, Scotland.

R.I.P. Nelson Mandela 18.7.1918 - 5.12.2013. A true legend of our time.

Scottish Highlands

Unfortunately it only dawned on me after I had clambered to the peak that I was without a wide angle lens (schoolboy error on my part) so the next best thing was a snap from my phone.

I will post some more detailed shots of the hares in the coming weeks (I did at least remember to take my SLR up to the top) but wanted to show a bit of context and the wider environment with this shot.

A white (Leucistic) Red Kite at Gigrin Farm, Wales

Around 1% of all kites in Wales show some leucistic tendencies - meaning their colouration is mainly pure white and not the usual reds & blacks of a 'normal' kite.

Leucism differs from albinism in that pigment is not entirely absent - in most cases it is at least retained in the eyes. By contrast, albino means the lack of colouring and is evidenced by pink eyes.

Although leucistic kites can sometimes attract the unwanted attentions of other red kites and corvids who harangue the white birds, this one seemed quite at home amongst the other birds at Gigrin.
