The Wormer- en Jisperveld is a nature area, covering 18 km² (of which 0.7 km² are a protected area), situated between the towns De Rijp, Purmerend en Wormerveer. The area consists mainly of marshland, grassland and open water.

The Wormer- en Jisperveld contains national important populations of nesting birds as the Great Bittern, Ruff, Godwit, Gadwall and Shoveler. The area is also important for foraging birds as for instance the Spoonbill and the various species of Snipes and Harriers. Among the wintering birds are significant amounts of Wigeons and geese.

It is also one of the last havens for the unique and rare Dutch subspecies of the Tundra Vole (Microtus oeconomus arenicola).

The water and soil of the Wormer- en Jisperveld is brackish. Plants as the Marsh Fern, Marshmallow, Common Scurvygrass and Sundew can commonly be found.

The Schermer windmills
In the Land of Leeghwater, there were a lot of windmills which pumped water out of the large lakes. Today we live and work on this fertile land, which in some places lies at 4 metres (12 feet) below sea level. These former lakes are called reclaimed land (or, in Dutch: droogmakerij). The windmills on the reclaimed land of the Schermer worked so well that people here switched to pumping-stations for controlling water levels much later than anywhere else. That is why so many windmills have been preserved up to today.

Grootschermer is one of the towns that form the municipality Schermer. It was built in the so called Eilandspolder (Islands polder) and its origin dates back as far as 1300. It used to be surrounded by big lakes like the 'Schermer' and the 'Beemster'. These big lakes disappeared long ago. They now are polders - bodies of reclaimed land - since the early 17th century.
