The so-called Main Tower at the harbour entrance is the last vestige of Hoorn's old fortifications. It was built in 1532 - the small bell turret was added in 1631. Today the building hosts a restaurant and bar.
It was partly built with white stone from Belgium. The tower dominates the skyline of this town on the IJsselmeer, 40 kilometres north of Amsterdam and acquired city rights in 1357. Hoorn was an important home base for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and a very prosperous centre of trade. The Hoorn fleet plied the seven seas and returned laden with precious commodities. Exotic spices such as pepper, nutmeg, cloves and mace were sold at vast profits. With their skill in trade and seafaring, sons of Hoorn established the town’s name far and wide.
De Hoofdtoren is een van de laatste verdedigingswerken die er nog in Hoorn zijn bewaard. Tegenwoordig zijn er in de toren een grillbar en een restaurant gevestigd.
De toren staat aan de haven van de stad. Hij werd gebouwd in 1532 en de Noordse Compagnie was er gevestigd.
Naast de toren staat een standbeeld van de scheepsjongens van Bontekoe.

Hoorn is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is located on the IJsselmeer, 40 kilometres north of Amsterdam and acquired city rights in 1357. Hoorn has 70,000 inhabitants.
Cape Horn, the most southerly point of the Americas, was named after the town by Willem Schouten, who rounded it in 1616.

Built in 1662 for a trader called Schuyt. After bancrupcy it became a prison. Later on it was owned by the navy and it became a prison for the second time about 1 century later. Nowadays it's in use as a museum, an apartments block, a hotel, a cinema and, well, what not...
