The Dutch government has approved funding to construct a sea lock gate system in Ijmuiden, the Netherlands. This will allow much larger container and cruise ships to reach Amsterdam ports.

The lock project will cost more than €700 million, with most of the funding coming from the national government. Amsterdam city council and Noord-Holland province will also contribute yet-to-be-determined funds towards the project.

When completed, the complex will be one of the largest in the world, measuring 500 meters long and 18 meters deep. The current lock is 400 meters long and 15 meters deep.
