Walking around the old downtown of Fort Erie, Ontario, I was doing my usual hunting for colours and patterns to photograph. The original downtown area sits along the mouth of the Niagara River and at one time had a vibrant shopping district. Times have changed and the area is struggling badly. At a now-vacant storefront with an inset entrance area, one wall had been painted bright green. The mailboxes for the apartments above (I assume) were showing signs of weathering and neglect. Apartment designations on each mailbox was the basis for the title. The poor reflection of the green wall in the dirty store window seemed to provide a nice balance to the image. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with an AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm VR lense set to 38mm, ISO100 (Auto ISO), Daylight WB, Aperture priority, f/6.3, 1/200 sec with an EV-0.33 exposure bias (to keep the dark greens from causing the metering to render the image too light). PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final size to 9000px wide, level image, use exposure compensation to reduce (darken) exposure slightly by EV-0.33, use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool rotated to cover the right half of the frame to darken that area and better balance its tonality with the left side of the frame, slightly increase contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, very slightly boost Vibrance, sharpen, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: slightly darken the mid-tones using the tone curve tool, reduce the green-channel-only colour saturation slightly to tame the green paint a bit, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000px wide, sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 2048 for posting online, sharpen slightly, save.
