Bando d Kvar (www.flickr.com/groups/2472126@N24/ ) colleague Matt (www.flickr.com/photos/taggartjm/ ) and I were having a brief coffee break in a local Grimsby, Ontario coffee bar and I was showing him the new (to me) toy, the Olympus EM-5 (Mk1) and how unobtrusive it was to operate. I was setting up the camera to get a shot of what appears as the background in this image, when, as luck would have it, a woman who had been fairly busy on her cell phone at a nearby table stood up and wandered over nearer the window (just out of view to camera right), all the while continuing her conversation. She walked into the frame and I was not about to pass up what fate clearly had intended to be a composition I had to capture. Her gesture worked nicely with the angular lines of the background and the colours worked out nicely overall, although I think I need to speak to the proprietor about getting the blue-framed table reservation stands replaced by ones more in keeping with the rest of the colour scheme. Oh, and I think this is another Red Rule shot. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a hand-held (actually, table supported if truth be told) Olympus OM-D EM-5 (Mk1) fitted with an Olympus M Zuiko 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 lens set to 42mm, Intelligent Auto mode, Auto WB, ISO1600, f/5.6, 1/50 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Olympus RAW/ORF source file: crop off a bit of the right side to eliminate a dark doorframe that was protruding into the frame, set final image size to be 8000px wide, set exposure compensation to EV+0.25 (brighten slightly), very slightly boost contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, adjust colour temperature to be slightly warmer than as-shot (set to 4961K), sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: slightly boost overall contrast, use the tone curve tool to very slightly darken the top 20% of the curve to get a bit better definition in the hair while not impacting the rest of the image significantly, sharpen slightly, save, scale image to 6000px wide, sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 2048 wide for posting online, sharpen slightly, save.
