on saturday, mark and i leave for 5 weeks away, completely unplugged. we travel to nevis, west indies and stay in a small cottage by the sea. we're "off grid": no internet, television, email, social media, news, or screens. and we're also deeply plugged in: to ourselves, each other, and nature. our days are filled with books, yoga, music, writing, meditation, cooking, photography, long walks, ocean swims, and just being. this fills our spirits in inexpressible ways.

i’ll be back in early may. until then, be well, flickr friends!

a nearby park has big puddles filled with leaves. after the snow melts, we’re treated to a unique view: texture, shape, and color that survives winter. i love seeing what’s underneath the snow. before any green plants sprout from the ground, there’s a resting period with what’s underneath: the interesting, rich muck. and sometimes, in the right light, muck can be beautiful.

tsoknyi rinpoche wrote, “you don't have to say anything. you don't have to teach anything. you just have to be who you are: a bright flame shining in the darkness of despair, a shining example of a person able to cross bridges by opening your heart and mind.”

mark and i just returned from the porcupine mountains, where we spent 3 nights in a rustic yurt overlooking lake superior. we hoped to snowshoe through the woods, but instead we hiked on and around a variety of ground conditions. i was mesmerized by these forest ferns, so green and graceful after a long winter. i love the lessons and mysteries within nature.

ps: i’m grateful for the park rangers who added an additional cable to our yurt, which helped us feel safe (even cozy) as 50-mph winds howled all night.

as i’ve mentioned before, my husband isn’t enamored with my winter photography of “dead brown things.” but when i showed him a recent set of images, he yawned at my leaf reflections, which he typically enjoys (“maybe i’ve seen too many of them”), and perked up at this shot. surprised, i asked what was special about these (dead, brown) seed heads. mark responded, “i don’t know: they feel jaunty.” i love that description.
