My friend Anderson was working on an Alaska travel guide to be published in Taiwan, so he took many shots of tourist areas that I passed up in favor of nature shots. In this case, he wanted a shot of the eastern end of the Denali highway. He looked very carefully to find the exact spot pictured in our guidebook, and even waited for a car to come so the picture he took was very similar to the one in the guidebook. When I asked him why he did that, he replied, "Artists always copy." And indeed, several artists I know develop their craft by copying paintings by the great masters. Many photographers also try to copy images made by the great photographers. I try to do the opposite and find images that haven't been done before, and especially in famous photo spots I try to find a new take. I suppose this has something to do with the fact that I never took an art or photography class. There are advantages to both approaches....

A small break in the clouds at sunset, just long enough for me to get off a sunset shot.

Earl on the north side of Donohue Pass demonstrating his lightweight backpacking gear following the Ray Jardine philosophy. He even made his own pack, so we gave him the trail name of "lightfoot".

Continuing my special Chisholm Creek Park food channel edition, we proceed from the sushi selections favored by some of the birds to the salad bar. I don't know why, but I've been seeing a lot more beavers in the park. This one came by while I was busy shooting something else. This was the closest shot I got before the beaver noticed me and ducked under the water with a big splash. Cropped from a larger image.
