Even with the heat and humidity we have been having last week, I still managed to force myself to try to do some shooting. The wooden boardwalks are a bit easier for me to navigate, if short enough, but I still find myself struggling with compositions of late.
When shooting on a boardwalk in a tight compositional situation its very difficult to get the image you want…tying to separate portions of it to bring your subject forward from all of the clutter. Sometime clutter is a good thing as it gives the viewer lots of information to focus on.
Many of my Nature & Wildlife images are now available in beautiful canvas wrap prints as well as canvas prints in a natural wood floater frame. Please email me for details. jmwnaturesimages@comcast.net I have now moved all of this information over here at Flickr. Look for the first folder is my sets.

When the early morning light gives way to brighter harsher images I like to use my long lenses and look for the picture within the big picture. However isolating the subject is not always as easy as the books indicate, especially when you are confined to an elevated boardwalk in the middle of a swamp. In my younger years I would have jumped over the side and waded around to find good compositions…such now is not the case. So one has to get creative in photoshop and just think about how you might have done this in the field and then explore the many ways in PS to create the image. Here I isolated the main subject and placed it on a separate layer and added some fog and removed most of the color by making the BG into B&W and just reduced the opacity to reveal a little hint of color. Then I added Gaussian Blur to further reduced the distracting BG.

When shooting on boardwalk in a tight compositional situation its very difficult to get the image you want…tying to separate portions of it to bring your subject forward from all of the clutter. Sometime clutter is a good thing but here not so good. So with the tools at hand in PS CS6 I added a "fog layer" to separate and hopefully add a little more drama to this composition.

The wooden boardwalks offer some nice compositions and are a bit easier for me to navigate, if short enough, but I still find myself struggling with compositions of late. The main problem is the limited movement when you do find something of interest..ya just have to make the best of the situation.

This image was sized at 24x42 inches and would make a beautiful canvas wrap for your office or home. There is also a B&W sepia toned version of this with just a hint of some color showing through.
