On this camping trip to the Dinner Island area, I made an effort to use the IR camera more. Even though I chose to have a color IR filter installed in my Canon 30D, beautiful B&W images are just as easy to post process.

This is a 3 image hand stitched and blended and was shot off the top of a fence post, which BTW, makes a pretty good tripod.

I'm having some issues with getting the type of IR image from the newly converted 30D. The camera arrived back from LifePixel 2 days before I left on this Photo Adventure, so no time to do any fine-tuning.
I chose a much different IR filter than the norm based on the video tutorial from LifePixel...this might have been a big mistake. I have worked on other IR images made with the standard IR filter and found that there was a lot of Photoshop work involved to obtain a descent image. The video I reviewed indicated much more control over certain areas within the overall image. There is only a certain amount of global PS work one can do to an image, after that its careful selecting areas within the image and working more selectively. I don't really mind doing these extra steps as they are part of my normal PS workflow, but I was really hoping for much better results than what I'm now getting.
This image is not indicative of what I'm experiencing. I'll post some more IR.

I shot this old cattle loading pen in Blue Mesa Colorado in color IR...now my IR converted canon 30D by LifePixel.com has a 'Super Color' IR filter instead of the normal deep red IR filter most people use. What this allows is for an image with color, yet is still in IR. There is a lot more to play with in PS and in the canon RAW converter with this installed filter.
Of course you can still make great IR B&W images with the 'Super Color' IR filter, but with just a little extra work and you really have a bit more control in making the B&W image.
Normally this image would not make a very good straight B&W IR image due to the fact that the lighting was too flat on all of the FG. You need some strong sunlight on the green foliage to make those areas take on the bright white glowing appearance, which is so common with IR photography.
So with a litle of This and some of That, I came up with 'THIS'.

I was killing some time early one afternoon (note my Exif Data time was way off??) and found these nice aspen trees. I used the 30D IR camera with a wide angle of view and got right inside the grove of these trees and began looking for the unusual, not your everyday scene. I must have worked in there for over an hour.
One of the interesting things that I have found when working in B&W IR is that the brighter times of the day are actually the best, not unlike conventional color photography. Having just said that, I also found that early or late in the day when the shadows are long and the light more the liking of conventional color photography, this IR Color filter responds quite differently with some really nice images posssible. I'm still a bit new to this IR photography and this new filter but I really like it so far.

This is another one of the color IR images that in the first few seconds you view it will either WOW you or you'll ask "What the Hell is this".
I must admit that at first, maybe I made a big mistake in having the IR Super Color filter installed in my Canon 30D by LifePixel, as opposed to the standard dark red IR filter that most photographers choose for B&W IR work. Now IR color is very new to me, more so than B&W IR, but I'm now beginning to like what options this filter allows for my "MAD" creative mind.
It obviously does not work for all images, but when the lighting is just right it seems to allow for some surreal images. It seems that photographing in IR color mode that the warmer tones of early morning and late afternoon produces the best results, as opposed to the mid day strong lighting generally used for B&W IR photography. The nice thing is that if you don't like it in IR color, you just change it to IR B&W in photoshop.
