This image was made at Myakka SP here in Florida. The gator was about 11 foot. It has this soft shell turtle, which was still alive. The larger view will show a droplet of blood in mid air falling from the turtles neck. The turtle is in mid air as the gator was tossing him up and crunching the shell.

While updating backup HD's I came across an older image made at Myakka River SP. Funny story that could have turned disastrous. After spotting this huge 11 foot gator with this approximate 18 inch live Softshell turtle, I made my way down slowly to within 30 ft...close enough for my 400mm.

While head down shooting away, I noticed a person out of the corner of my eye going around me and getting closer to the gator. I grabbed her arm and pulled her back and began the lecture about the danger she was in and how that gator if it wanted to close that distance in a flash and have her for lunch instead of the turtle.

Now as photographically speaking, those images could have been ...well different, I really didn't want to put my life in her position. This woman was from the UK and did not realize just how bad of a situation she could have been in. I really doubt that gator was going to do anything other than eat that turtle, but with only an aluminum tripod to fend off a well over 10 ft. gator, I did not want to play that scenario.

Larger View

On the way back to my camper late one afternoon, I came across this wild boar feeding just off the edge of the road. I pulled over to his side and parked and sat there for over 20 minutes while he worked an area about 5 foot square.
He digs down with his snout and throws his head up and back throwing dirt and branches out of his way looking for roots and berries and acorns. These animals do a lot of ground destruction and are not welcomed. In fact they are trapped and removed from this park. But I can say, trapping will never bring these animals under any kind of control. A female can drop a dozen piglets up to four times a year.
