We're just back from a 5-day trip to Gettysburg, Antietam and Harpers Ferry. Statues and pictures of Abe are everywhere, so I couldn't miss this opportunity to share a bench with him for a minute...

After several days of hot, humid weather, on our final day, when we visited the battlefields of Day 3 (the final day) of the campaign, the weather was cool and misty. You can definitely see that autumn is on the way, and the tourism season on the battlefields will soon dry up...

The Gettysburg National Military Park now owns nearly all of the battlefield sites and is committed to returning them to the condition in which they existed at the time of the war. The farmhouses are still intact, but are rented to National Park employees.

Today's edition of "Armchair Traveling During the Coronavirus" takes me back to our trip to Gettysburg a year ago. We visited the Antietam Battlefield. In the Battle of Antietam, General Robert E. Lee's first invasion of the North ended on this battlefield in 1862.It was the bloodiest day in United States history, with a combined tally of 22,717 dead, wounded, or missing. This peaceful bucolic scene makes it hard to imagine how bloody this battle was.
