We toured the Minnesota Capitol Building in St. Paul recently and were amazed at the beautiful architecture. Legislators were on hiatus, so we were free to wander around and see the House, Senate and Judicial chambers. One more addition to my Capitol collection !

Viewed from a bluff in Eagle Point Park along the river in Dubuque, Iowa. We passed through ~20 locks on our journey from Red Wing, MN to Alton, IL, mostly at night. It's a very efficient process, particularly because the passenger/cruise boats get priority over the freight barges. 12 image pano (obviously the lock is not really curved). Of the 26 locks, only one has a name; the others just have a number. Seems rather lacking in creativity on the part of the Army Corps of Engineers who built and maintain the locks.

We visited the tiny town of Wabasha, Minnesota on a quiet Sunday afternoon when almost everything in town was shut down (except for the National Eagle Center). So I amused myself by going under the ~2,500 foot truss bridge over the Mississippi. I can never resist a good vanishing point!

Near Wabasha, Minnesota; our first night on the river we were rewarded with this golden sunset. Cruising on the river is a quiet, peaceful experience. The boat maintains a stately 15-17 mph pace.

Explore #9. One of our favorite excursions during the Mississippi River Cruise was a visit to a dairy farm and Harvestville Farm, which is a destination for family fun. It has a sunflower field during summer, a pumpkin patch and corn maze in the fall, and plenty of play equipment and fields for kids to run and play. The family that runs the farm, the 5th generation at this location, is enthusiastic and fun, cementing our opinion that midwest folks, and Iowans in particular, are all really good people and genuinely nice. www.harvestvillefarm.com/
