It was sort of amusing to watch all the cell phone toting tourists pointing their cameras at the sun to catch the sunrise. The real picture at dawn is into the canyon where the colorful rock is gradually lit until it glows purple, gold, red and orange.
This was shot on a tripod, and I know the horizon is perfectly level - the canyon rim is obviously not totally flat !

Top on the list of "must-sees" during a visit to Grand Canyon are both a sunrise and a sunset. There wasn't much color in the sky, but the canyon walls were bathed with the last rays of sun. We had a "partial canyon view" room at our lodge, but after the sun sets, there's really nothing to see - it's a big black hole !

Still considered an engineering marvel, Hoover Dam has been supplying power to Southern California, Nevada and Arizona since 1935. A beautiful spring day is the best time to see the dam. Temperatures can soar to over 110 degrees in the summer.
This was taken from about the midspan of the new bridge.

Our first stop in the Grand Canyon was Mather Point near the visitor center. It's probably the most crowded area in the park, but with good reason - the rim is easily accessible and offers gorgeous views !

Before the sun started to break over the horizon, my camera was aimed east. After the sun started to paint the rocks inside the canyon, the real show was inside the canyon which comes alive at sunrise.
