The tide pools offer a fascinating variety of life forms - I just wish I knew what these things are...

The caption is the title of Ed Ricketts' well known book on marine biology; I was in Monterey to attend a seminar on John Steinbeck's beloved book "Cannery Row" in which Doc Ricketts is the main character. I'm sure Ricketts visited the same tidal pools in search of his specimens.

☺ ☻ Doesn't it have a friendly face?
Found on the wall at Aggasiz Hall, built in 1916-1917 at Hopkins Marine Station, Monterey, CA (a Stanford University campus). The building was restored and seismically upgraded but they retained a lot of the vintage charm, including original windows with wavy glass and even this old phone !

This is the state of telephone technology just under 100 years ago - amazing !

The card catalog in the Miller Library at Hopkins Marine Station is no longer used, but still sits in a position of prominence, probably because it is such a beautiful design, and also for nostalgic reasons. The "art" of researching using the card catalog is now a thing of the past.

It was really dark in the library; fortunately this camera can "see in the dark" - ISO 12800 !

There was not a single cloud in the sky on this rare warm evening in Monterey Bay, so the sun just sank into the ocean and was extinguished. Sunsets at sea are like that - now you see it, now you don't !

Even with the 10-stop filter, shooting into the sun isn't very effective - maybe if I had the 10-stop plus the graduated filter... but sunset happens so fast that there isn't time to change the strategy at the last minute...

I do like the way the light skips across the surface of the water.
