We were up really early yesterday morning for a hike on the Woodchuck Basin Trail in the Mokelumne Wilderness above Lake Alpine in Alpine County. We finished the hike on the ridge of the mountain at about 8,900 feet elevation. You can see the trail along the side of the hill in the middle of this image. We were treated to carpets of beautiful wildflowers for most of the trip, which was about 5 miles round trip.
I didn't experience any problems at all with the foot that I broke back in April (I have a sturdy pair of REI hiking boots), though my knees were definitely complaining on the trip back down the mountain !

Shortly after we started climbing the mountain at the Woodchuck Basin Trail. I wish we had been here at dawn - it was so beautiful !
I'm kind of wishing I had gotten the Canon EOS 6D camera with built-in GPS, because it's impossible to know (or remember) exactly where you were when each image was taken.

We took a hike yesterday morning on the ART - Arnold Rim Trail, which takes you to the "Top of the World" overlook above Arnold, which is about 4,500 feet elevation - I guess those locals are subject to a bit of hyperbole. The first part was a pleasant stroll through pines with an undergrowth of ferns. The last half of the trail was a steep uphill climb to the crest of the mountain. We saw a large pile of fresh bear scat right in the middle of the trail; fortunately our friend had a dog, so we weren't worried about encountering any of the local wildlife.

The giant stump of a sequoia tree that was sawed dawn many years ago has interesting texture and shapes. I see the big googly eyes of a monster here !

A giant stump of a sequoia tree in Calaveras State Park - about 20 feet in diameter; fortunately conservationists would now prohibit such destruction of our majestic redwoods.
