India, Kerala or Kēraḷam, Tamil Nadu, Mannur.
📌… while India is best known for growing tea, the country's coffee past dates back to the 17th century.
There are 5 major tea plantations around the city of Munnar at a height of 1500/2600 m & a perfect climate. By the end of the 19th century during the British occupation, they established tea plantations, based on plants imported from China.

Black tea production dominates in the Nilgiris, named after the Nilgiri Mountains, literally "Blue Mountains" that stretch across the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka & Kerala in southern India.
Nilgiri is considered the highest tea-growing region in the world - with tea gardens at an altitude of more than 2,500 meters above sea level. Similar to Darjeeling, the Nilgiris were once a resort for British colonial officials.

The first attempts to grow tea here were made in 1835. The first commercial tea gardens opened in 1859. Nilgiri tea is best known for its high quality. Tea is produced in Nilgiri by more than 50,000 small farmers & some large plantations. Better qualities are mainly harvested by hand, inferior qualities by machine.

One of the most famous tea specialties of the Nilgiris is the so-called "Frost Tea", this is harvested in winter, when the temperatures are cool, especially at night & can even drop to below zero, while the thermometer can climb up to 25° C during the day. These temperature fluctuations, short days & long nights as well as low humidity & the associated slow growth of the tea plants favour the production of a particularly aromatic & high-quality tea. The processing of the fresh tea leaves also requires the utmost care, especially cold & dry air is used to wither the leaves. Particular care is also taken when rolling & caution is taken not to exert too much pressure on the sheet. The temperatures when oxidizing the leaves are also lower than usual. The tea is characterized by particularly sweet & floral notes.

The Nilgiris are home to the largest cooperative association of tea smallholders in India. About 30,000 small farmers have joined the cooperative called “Indcoserve”, existed since 1965, which produces 13 million kilograms of black tea annually in 16 tea factories. This is sold under its own brands, mainly on the domestic market.
