Another of the Maheno Wreck

Built in 1905, the SS Maheno was one of the first turbine-driven steamers. She plied a regular route between Sydney and Auckland until she was commissioned as a hospital ship in Europe during World War One. She also served in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

In 1935, she and her sister ship the Oonah were sold to Japan for scrap.

The rudders of the boats were removed and they were being towed to Japan. When they reached Queensland Waters, a cyclonic storm snapped the tow chain and the Maheno drifted helplessly onto Fraser Island's ocean beach.

I've been wanting to capture this wreck for a long time so I was pleased that the conditions were halfway decent on our last night on the island, although a stunning sunset would have been on my list if I could order up one. Still there was a nice bit of pastel light lending a gentle quality to the scene.

Another shot taken whilst traversing 75 mile beach on Fraser Island/K'gari. The clouds over this lonely pandanus tree caught my eye. I find how these trees hang on to seemingly only bare rock quite amazing!

The drive along 75 mile beach on Fraser Island (K'gari) is an ever changing visual delight with the sparkling blue waters and white sand of the Pacific Ocean on one side and a mix of rolling sand dunes and drifts along with incredible geological formations such as these towering ochre cliffs on the other. In amongst all this beauty is a scattering of campers, swimmers and fisherman along with the odd dingo. A shipwreck is also thrown in for good measure!

Hello Flickr friends, it's been a while. I've been so busy since we started building and then moved into our new home, the camera sort of got lost in the process.
We've been wanting to get to Fraser Island (K'gari) for about 15 years, but typically we kept putting off being tourists in our own backyard. We finally made it last week along with some friends visiting from Victoria. And what a magical place it is. And we only got bogged once :)) I only got a few shots that I was happy with so I'll post them over the coming weeks as I slowly get back into the swing of Flickr and visit all your streams.

This is the breathtaking beautiful Lake McKenzie. The water is so blue and the sand so white its almost blinding, sun glasses are a definite must!
