I made this quilt for my partner in the third round of the Schnitzel and Boo Mini Quilt Swap on Instagram. Her inspiration photos included this quilt and when I saw it I knew it would be perfect to make.

Title: Colour Wheel
Pattern: Colour Wheel by Holly DeGroot from issue 12 of Love PatchWork & Quilting magazine
Fabrics: Many different Kona solids, the background is a trees print from Carolyn Friedlander's Architextures line, the binding is hand drawn stripes in charcoal from her Botanics line and the backing is lightning in blue from her Doe line. See a photo that shows the label and backing here.
Quilting: Hand quilted using 12 different colours of a variety of Anchor and DMC perle 8 cotton and Aurifil 12 weight thread. Each wedge is quilted with three lines that match the main colour of that section. The binding is also hand quilted to the front of the quilt using the same 12 threads, changing colour for each section. See photos that show the quilting and binding here, here and here.
Batting: Hobbs Heirloom Washable Wool Batting
Finished Size: 24" x 24" (I downsized the original pattern from 80" square)
Started and Completed: January 2015

To get the many different colours of Kona required I purchased four different charm packs (bright, classic, pastel, dark) as well as a bundle of bright FQs from Mad About Patchwork. However, I still didn't have enough yellow variety so I dropped one of the yellow sections and added a pink section (so this quilt isn't actually a real colour wheel.)

I downsized the pattern by printing all of the templates at 30%. The log cabins are paper pieced and the remaining components are pieced using freezer paper piecing. The various parts are assembled into dresden plate wedges and then assembled just like a classic dresden plate. As an added bonus this means that the edges are all finished so you don't have to worry about turning them under when you appliqué the centre to the background.

I love this quilt so much that I am sad that I have to send it away -- I am seriously considering making this quilt a second time but at the original size instead.
