This my entry into the Modern Mini Challenge.

Title: "Rainbow Compass" made using the pattern "Sunshine Rose Garden" from the July/August 2007 issue of Quilter's Newsletter.
Fabrics: Robert Kaufman Kona Solids. 64 different colours plus white (you can see a photo of the fabrics I used here.
Backing: Robert Kaufman Kona Solid in white. You can see a photo of the back here.
Binding: "Stripe in Bright" from the line Remix by Ann Kelle for Robert Kaufman
Quilting: I used a monofilimant thread with white thread in the bobbin (Connecting Threads Essential Cotton Thread) to outline each of the compass points using my walking foot. I then used white thread on both the top and bottom along with my free motion foot to quilt a tiny pebble in the background (based loosely on Leah Day's Pebbling Tutorial. There are closeup photos of the quilting on the front here and here and on the back here and here.
Batting: Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 Batting.
Finished Size: 20" by 20".
Started: February 8, 2012
Completed: March 1, 2012.

I bought a used copy the magzine I used when I stumbled across the foundations for the pattern on the Quilter's Newsletter website -- I knew that I wanted to try the pattern and neeeded the rest of it to do so. You can see what the quilt in the pattern looks like here.

I thought that a rainbow colour palette for the compass would be perfect but I somehow needed to get 64 different Konas that worked well together. I do have a Kona colour card but it's still hard to pick out the perfect colours and see what they look like next to each other. So, I ordered one of each of the store-made Kona jelly rolls offered by Mad About Patchwork. I then took the bright, colour wheel colours from those rolls and lined the strips up in the order of the colour wheel. I then took out strips that didn't seem to fit until I was left with 64 strips. The compass points are small enough that one 2.5"xWOF strip is more than enough for each compass point.

Some fun facts:
- The compass is paper-pieced. The centre circle was inserted using Dale Fleming's Six-Minute Circle technique. The compass is pieced into the background using a standard curved piecing technique.
- There are 64 compass points, each is a different colour of Kona solid.
- The compass has a total of 184 pieces.
- It took approximately 8 hours to piece the top and 6 hours to quilt it. I have pieced and quilted lap-sized quilts in less time than it took to make this mini!
- While quilting I used 5 bobbins of thread.
- I made two quilt tops simultaneously so that I would have a backup if I screwed something up (the total piecing time for both tops together was 12 hours.) I am probably going to use the second compass in a larger quilt.
